While I’m not one of these anti-Iraq, it’s all Bush’s fault, point-the-finger-at-republicans idiots you see a lot on TV and such, Iraq is still quite the mess. If you look at the situation closely though it isn’t really our (meaning Americans) fault, it is the religious wackos over there that are the problem. They have gone from primarily targeting and fighting us to killing each other. We just happen to get in the way. In a situation like that there is only so much we can do militarily.
While the republicans are pretty much following the party line on the matter, only a small handful of democrats are offering any ideas for what to do. They range everything from pulling out completely to symbolically pulling out. Well, I’ve come up with my own idea on how to solve this.
The main reason at the moment to stay is to keep Iraq from collapsing from all of the infighting between the Suni’s, Shi’ites and Kurds and the whole region erupting into a war. So here is what we do, we take our troops out of the cities and stop playing hide and seek with these Qur’an thumping, virgin seeking rag heads. We take the troops and basically surround the country, putting them primarily on the Iranian and Syrian borders. We then add backup troops in Saudi and Turkey (where we have them anyway). Of course we provide a nice wall of firepower around the oil facilities as well.
Once we do that, we them have the civil war that they are so determined to have. Every new country needs a good civil war to get out the bullshit and release their chest thumping tensions. Our troops would only be there then to keep everyone else from interfering and influencing the outcome, thus preventing the whole region from becoming one big war zone. Not one camel gets across the border and not one magic carpet flies into Iraq until they are done knocking each other off.
Now, once they have killed enough of each other and decided that they want to live in peace, we let them reestablish their government — overseeing everything of course to make sure they aren’t just playing around — and make ammends. Everyone shakes hands, smiles for the cameras, the infidels have a beer and all is well in the middle east. HOWEVER, if they can’t come to a reasonable outcome and are still fighting over which version of rag to wear then we start knocking off whatever bad guys are left, starting at the top, until they become reasonable.
If they still won’t submit, then we divide the country up and give one third to Turkey (the Kurds will love that), one third to Saudi Arabia, and one third to Jordan. Of course we tell them that this will be the outcome before hand so that they will have motivation to calm down and act like the civil people their core religion says they are.
In any event, our troops stay out of the way other than to prevent outside influence. They get a nice rest and play ring masters instead of cops. Also, given their concentrated positions, they can easily redeploy as necessary to say Korea.
If all goes well, we are out of there in a year or so with very minimal to no casualities and we don’t spend another couple of billion on ammo, fuel, etc. chasing these guys around the sand. Even better, we round up the good Iraqi people that have small businesses and such, take them to a nice safe haven and provide them with food and shelter while their deranged countrymen beat each other up. When the fighting is done, we help them rebuild their businesses and homes that were destroyed. In the end, they either have a peaceful, productive country or they have no country at all.
Hell, it might even piss of Iran enough that they get twitchy and we can take care of that problem while we are there. Or they might realize that several regiments of U.S. tanks on their border isn’t a good thing and stop playing games with their nuclear program.
